When you need to open a PDF, you'll usually opt for one of two options: the Reader app for Windows 8 and 10 (often pre-installed with the operating system, or available from the Windows Store), or trusty stalwart Adobe Reader.

Both are solid options, but there are many other free options, each with its own advantages. If you want to merge documents, convert them to a different format or extract images, there's a free tool that will make it straightforward.

If you're short on drive space, there are also ultra-lightweight viewers available that will occupy under two megabytes (compared to Adobe Reader, which takes up 148MB), plus portable apps that run directly from a USB stick.

After installation, each of these programs will ask if you want to make it your default PDF reader. We recommend leaving your settings as they are until you've had a chance to try the new software and see if it's right for you. If you're satisfied with its performance, you can make it your go-to program for PDFs by right-clicking one and selecting 'Open with'. Browse to the EXE file for your new PDF reader, check 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file', then click 'OK'.

Most programs will also ask you to install their corresponding browser extensions. Again, we recommend skipping this until you've had a chance to get used to the new software. You can always install the extensions through your browser's store at a later date.

Foxit Reader

Foxit Reader is perhaps the best known alternative to Adobe Reader, and it's easy to see why. Its ribbon-based interface takes inspiration from Microsoft Office, so you'll instinctively know where to find its impressive array of tools.

The tabbed interface makes it easy to work with multiple PDFs at the same time, and there are some nice extra touches such as form filling and PDF annotation.

The ubiquity of the PDF format makes it a popular target for malware and virus developers, so Foxit Reader offers a Safe Reading mode that provides control over things such as internal links and Javascript integration.

Downloadable add-ons are available to convert PDFs to other formats (and vice versa) and to combine multiple PDFs into a single file. File conversion is incredibly simple thanks to the inclusion of an entry in Windows' context menu.

Nitro Reader

Like Foxit Reader, Nitro Reader bears more than a passing resemblance to Microsoft Office -- and this is no bad thing. Right from the start this feels like a highly accomplished piece of software and there are plenty of document viewing options to choose from.

But this is a program that's about more than just viewing. As well as including an annotation and highlighting option, Nitro PDF also lets you add sticky notes to the documents you open.

If you need to create PDFs from other documents, this can be one with Nitro PDF, and it is also possible to convert in the opposite direction -- PDF to text, for example. You can also extract all of the images from a PDFs in one fell swoop, digitally sign electronic documents with an e-signature. This is without doubt one of the most polished PDF tools out there, and it would be easy to forget that it is completely free of charge.

PDF-XChange Editor

PDF-XChange Editor replaces the now discontinued PDF-XChange Viewer, and it is available as both a portable app and a regular installable program.

The free edition contains handy features such as tracked comments, the ability to insert or extract pages, and digital signing, but those marked 'Pro' in the menu are only available in the paid-for version. The free edition's killer feature is OCR. You can scan printed documents, have the text converted into searchable format, and save the resulting document as a PDF.

During installation, we recommend selecting the 'Custom' option rather than 'Complete', then deselect the components you don't want to install. They are presented as an expandable tree, so make sure you click all the '+' icons to discover what's hidden there.

Slim PDF Reader

Slim PDF Reader is by far the smallest download in this roundup, occupying just 1.43MB of space, and makes a virtue of its frill-free approach.

This really is little more than a viewer, but that's no bad thing. Controls and navigations are simple and self-explanatory, and the program benefits from being lightning-fast.

Search, print and rotate are the most advanced features you'll find, although you are invited to try a free trial of the PDF to Office converter.

If you're looking for a PDF reader without the bloat, this could be the ideal choice. The only real drawback is the inability to view two pages side-by-side as a spread.

Icecream Ebook Reader

As the name suggests, Icecream Ebook Reader is designed primarily for viewing EPUB and MOBI documents, but it doubles as a simple PDF reader.

As this is an ebook reader, you are encouraged to organise all of your books into a library, sortable by type and fully searchable -- but there's nothing to stop you from just opening individual PDFs.

The program has a slightly unusual look, but it is a joy to use. Navigation of PDFs is wonderfully simple, and there are a number of viewing modes to choose from, including an eye-friendly night mode. You can quickly add bookmarks and create notes, which are accessed through the fly-out Contents pane.

Microsoft backtracks on controversial Windows 10 upgrade tactics (again)

Microsoft has backtracked on the recent move it made to push through more Windows 10 upgrades, whereby clicking on the cross icon to close the 'Get Windows 10' pop-up was considered as consent for the OS upgrade.

Of course, you'd think that clicking that cross would simply be dismissing the pop-up, not agreeing to a scheduled upgrade (which was the case for those with their PCs set to accept recommended updates – with Windows 10 being 'recommended'), so predictably enough this caused quite the PR storm.

However, according to a BBC report, Redmond has now changed things based on "customer feedback" (read: being shouted at) so users now have the chance to cancel the scheduled upgrade.

Microsoft told the Beeb: "We've added another notification that confirms the time of the scheduled upgrade and provides the customer an additional opportunity for cancelling or rescheduling the upgrade."

Definite no

That's obviously an improvement to having a surprise upgrade fire up on your PC after dismissing a nag screen, but as others are pointing out, there should be a simple dismissal where you can say no to Windows 10 and never be bothered by the spectre of it again, if you've firmly decided you don't want to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1.

It's not really that much to ask, is it?

Sadly, Microsoft seems hell-bent on attempting to cajole as many folks as possible into upgrading to the new OS, somewhat understandably given the failure of Windows 8 before it. But if doing so loses the collective goodwill of Windows users, regardless of whether Windows 10 is seen as a good operating system or not, it's going to be a public relations failure.

There may be very good reasons why people don't want to upgrade, and one of those was revealed yesterday, with the announcement that 32-bit Windows 10 is doubling up the minimum amount of system memory required to 2GB with the release of the Anniversary Update this summer. That could be a massive problem for those running devices with 1GB of memory who have had an upgrade pushed onto them.

Hike in Windows 10's minimum spec could torpedo low-end PCs

Microsoft is planning considerable changes with the incoming Anniversary Update which is expected to land late July, but what you probably didn't know is that one element of the minimum spec for the OS will be upped.

As the Inquirer reports, after the upgrade, the minimum amount of system memory required to run Windows 10 will be 2GB for the 32-bit version of the OS rather than 1GB, meaning it will be the same as it currently is for the 64-bit version. No other spec changes are being made.

Your 1GB machine could possibly still function with 32-bit Windows 10, but will doubtless struggle a great deal more particularly when multitasking.

You can always upgrade your memory of course, which may not be a particularly expensive or difficult prospect for some, although some notebooks or other devices like tablets may prove a lot more problematic to boost up to the required level (or indeed impossible in some cases), leaving owners of such hardware in a very uncomfortable position.

And probably wishing they didn't upgrade to Windows 10, if they made the move from Windows 7/8.1 earlier this year or last year.

Shoring up security

The Anniversary Update for Windows 10 will likely be unleashed on the one-year anniversary of the release of the OS, which would make sense, and as we reported earlier today, the update will soon be being tested by Windows Insiders.

Also on the one-year anniversary of the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is furthermore planning to make it compulsory that new PCs come with TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 for better security – this is more secure than TPM 1.2 and includes support for SHA-256 hashing.

That will only affect vendors producing new PCs, of course, although there will be one exception: TPM will still remain optional for devices running Windows 10 IoT Core like the Raspberry Pi.

Round up: Best free parental control software 2016

Introduction

It's hard to imagine anything less child-friendly than an uncensored internet. A rabid wolf, maybe, or a playground floored with broken glass and razor wire. The more connected we become the more we need everybody online - and that means trying to ensure that our children aren't exposed to the very worst content, ideas and behaviour that exist online.

Software can't do everything, of course, but it can help to make parents' lives much easier. These are our picks of the best parental control software in 2016.

Qustodio

Most parental control software is aimed at Windows, but Qustodio (think 'custodian') is also available for OS X, Android, iOS, Kindle and Nook.

The free version is limited to one user and one device, but if you want to control multiple devices the paid-for version isn't too steep at US$44.95/£29.95 (about AU$61) per year for up to five devices (higher-end plans are available for larger families).

The free version covers the basics, enabling you to set rules and time schedules, block pornography and other unsuitable content; if you go for the paid-for version that adds SMS monitoring, social media features and per-app controls. But even the free version is one of the most comprehensive parental control apps around.

Its raft of features and support for a wide range of platforms make Qustodio our top recommended parental control software, but there are many other excellent free programs available, some of which may be better suited to your individual needs.Read on for more of the best tools to keep your kids safe online.

FamilyShield

FamilyShield is a free service from OpenDNS. It automatically blocks domains that OpenDNS has flagged under the headings "tasteless, proxy/anonymizer, sexuality, or pornography".

One of the big pluses here is that while FamilyShield can run on PCs and mobile devices, you can also apply it to your network router and filter all the traffic that passes through it - it's just a matter of changing the DNS server numbers in your control panel, and that has the happy benefit of improving DNS lookup speeds on some ISPs. By filtering everything at the router level, every device on your network benefits from the filters.

Norton Family

Its creators would really like you to subscribe to the paid-for Premier version, but the free edition of Norton Family is an excellent tool to support you in protecting your kids online.

You can block inappropriate web content and monitor the kids' online activities, see what they've been searching for and how often they've been on Facebook (and whether they're using a fake name or age), ensure they don't accidentally give out personal information and lock down your internet connection at specific times.

The Premier version adds video supervision, location tracking, Android app and SMS use and time-locks for Android apps. That's US$49.99, £29.99 (about AU$61) per year.

Kidlogger

We're in two minds about using logging software for children and teenagers: tracking every single keystroke, SMS, photo, instant message, Skype call and location feels like an invasion of privacy, but we can see the benefit for parents who suspect their child may be keeping something important private, such as online bullying or grooming.

The free version of Kidlogger tracks one device and keeps logs for nine days. Upgrading to the premium package for US$29 (about £19.72, AU$40.20) per year lets you monitor five devices, with log history stored for 30 days.

The service is available for Windows, Mac and Android, and there's a separate app for non-jailbroken iPhones and iPads.

Spyrix Free Keylogger

Keyloggers have something of a bad reputation online, as they're often used by villains, but they can be a force for good too, and Spyrix's features enable you to see what your children have been up to.

Although it's dubbed parental control software, it's really a monitoring program; it doesn't stop the kids getting up to no good, but it does let you see exactly what they've done. That means it isn't really appropriate for younger children's computers, but it may be appropriate for older children if you suspect online bullying or other unpleasantness.

WebFilter Pro

WebFilter Pro is a cloud-based add-on for Chrome and Firefox that adds filters to web browsing. It can block malware, adult content including drug, guns and other inappropriate content, proxy servers, known spam sources, social networks and media streaming sites.

You can add your own sites to the blocklist and to the whitelist, but there's a fairly big Achilles Heel here: while there's password protection to stop the kids from overriding your settings, there's nothing to stop them from simply disabling or uninstalling the extension altogether. That means the add-on does a decent job, but it's not one for older children.

Windows Live Family Safety

Family Safety is bundled into Windows 8 and 10, but if you're running an older version of Windows you can download it via Windows Essentials.

The app offers a range of parental controls including restricting web browsers to specific sites or specific kinds of content; tracking your kids' activities and enabling you to see what websites they've visited

You can also lock down search engines so they don't return inappropriate results, and limit what can be done at specific times - handy if you're trying to ensure your kids aren't spending every waking hour in multiplayer gaming or social media. It's particularly good if you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Edge browsers.

Zoodles Kid Mode

The problem with many parental control apps is that they're most effective for older children: while filtering adult content and other unpleasantness is obviously a good thing, there's plenty of stuff that isn't adult that can still scare younger children silly.

Zoodles Kid Mode addresses that by combining filtered browsing and a dedicated web browser to create a walled garden: everything in it is safe for kids and there's no risk of anything awful popping up.

In addition to Windows, Zoodles Kid Mode is also available for Macs, Android and iOS, and a brand new version is currently in development.

K9 Web Protection

Available for PC, Mac, iOS and Android (but not updated in some time: the most recent release notes date from 2014)), K9 Web Protection's features include blocking of 70 different website categories (including illegal drugs, dating and racism), time restrictions, mandatory SafeSearch in Google, detection of new and malicious adult websites and custom block/allow lists.

It doesn't cover chat programs, we wouldn't rely on its ageing database to block malware and there aren't options for multiple users (for example, you can't have different settings for a teenager and for a younger child) but K9 is impressively difficult to disable or remove, and it's good at what it does.

FoxFilter

There are plenty of browser add-ons that offer parental control, but there's a big flaw in each and every one of them: if your child downloads or sideloads a different browser, they're useless.

That means filters such as FoxFilter are useful only for children who won't do that, or for environments where the filtering is just extra insurance for children who are usually within sight and sound of the grown-ups.

In such cases it's simple and effective, with good blocking of suspicious content and the ability to fine-tune the filter so it doesn't block innocent content. It's now also available for Google Chrome.

Other tools to consider

Kindergate Parental Control - Designed for schools as well as home users, Kindergate includes ad-blocking, content filtering (using real-time analysis, not just a database of known sites) and activity logging.

Kaspersky Safe Kids - Available for Windows PCs and Android devices. In addition to content filtering and social media monitoring, it can track your kids' location using their phone's GPS.

Refog Personal Monitor - Refog is designed to be unobtrusive, running quietly in the background while you monitor your kids' activity remotely. Much more than just a keylogger, it can also record voice chats, monitor visited websites and games, and capture screen grabs.

Windows 10 is a step closer to big anniversary release

The Anniversary Update for Windows 10 is just around the corner with it now being feature-locked as Microsoft prepares the final touches for the major upgrade.

According to sources familiar with Redmond's internal work on the operating system who spoke to Win Beta, the update has been feature-locked, which means it's frozen in terms of adding stuff, and Microsoft is now working on stabilising the release and squashing any bugs that pop up during the final furlongs.

Any major features which haven't been introduced at this point – with version 1607 of Windows 10 now being official as an internal build at Microsoft – will be put back to what's known as the Redstone 2 update which is expected early next year (the Anniversary Update was previously known as Redstone 1).

Target date

Naturally, the update will reach Windows Insiders for testing soon enough, ahead of a likely full release on the one-year anniversary of the launch of Windows 10 (the most likely date given that this is the 'Anniversary Update' – we're sure Microsoft will do its best to hit this target).

While those who already have Windows 10 may be keenly anticipating the goodies they'll receive in just a couple of months now, those Windows 7/8.1 users who are being badgered to upgrade to Microsoft's newest OS are doubtless alarmed at the latest measure brought forward by the "Get Windows 10" scheme.

As we reported yesterday, closing the pop-up box urging you to upgrade is now apparently taken as consent that you wish to fire up Windows 10 on your machine – if you've set your PC to accept recommended updates, which the OS now is – and this is bizarre thinking to say the least.

If you aren't manually vetting your Windows updates, you should certainly take care in order to avoid a 'surprise' upgrade kicking off…

5 good alternatives to Google Docs

Introduction

The go-to cloud application these days is Google Docs. Many office workers rely on it in the same way we rely on fossil fuels and Starbucks. Yet, you might wonder if there is something you're missing if you choose a different cloud suite for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. There are always options, and some of the alternatives are powerful and innovative.

Interestingly, one of the trends with knowledge workers is to move away from the traditional cloud document editing suite that includes a presentation tool and a spreadsheet. Apps are becoming more focused on specific tasks – for example, using Evernote for writing notes shared between teams and then creating full business docs in a different app.

"Many clients we work with are shifting from just wanting a standard 'office suite' to looking at more modern alternatives," says Alan Lepofsky, the Vice President and Principal Analyst for the Future of Work at Constellation Research. "For example, Microsoft is making some good progress with Sway. IBM is getting people to create content with IBM Watson Analytics, similar to the 'personal business intelligence' available from Tableau."

Still, workers often need the basic suite, and the following alternatives provide a solid platform for completing business plans, generating sales charts, and creating slideshows.

1. ONLYOFFICE

It's possible you have not heard of this document editing suite, which shares many of the same features as Google Docs. ONLYOFFICE is designed for team collaboration and has modules for word processing, spreadsheets, and slideshows plus additional modules for CRM, project management, and email.

One of the most interesting differentiators is that, when teams collaborate on a document, there are two modes. Fast mode shows all changes instantly from any user. However, another mode allows users to make changes but not have them appear until he or she selects to save them, offering some degree of confidentiality.

Lepofsky had not heard of this app but says it is important to evaluate Google Docs to see if it integrates with current systems – for example, the email app and cloud storage systems you use.

2. Dropbox Paper

This little-known alternative to Google Docs integrates into the Dropbox storage service and apps. It's not as well-known because Dropbox intends to move far beyond storage into business applications, and this is a first foray into that market.

The biggest difference between Dropbox Paper and Google Docs, other than the Dropbox integration, is that Paper lets you integrate code snippets as a team and edit them. It might be a 'light' tool for now without the extensive templates of Microsoft Office or the integration with other apps in the Zoho suite, but it does work well with the Dropbox storage service that's so popular with office workers these days.

Importantly, it shows Dropbox is heading in a new direction to become an office productivity tool that helps teams complete projects. "Many people want lightweight note-taking which is where Evernote, OneNote, Box Notes, Google Keep, and DropBox Paper come in," says Lepofsky.

3. Zoho Writer

A well-established Google Docs alternative, Zoho Writer (and the entire Zoho suite of cloud-enabled products) provide a completely different ecosystem, one that has nothing to do with Google. Zoho has tools for email, marketing, CRM, helpdesk, finance, and much more.

Zoho Writer is the bread-and-butter app for knowledge workers. It has three modes for working – one that is for individual doc writing, one for team-based collaboration and review, and one that is for getting docs ready for distribution. (A fourth 'reader' mode removes most features to make documents easier to read on the screen.)

When collaborating, Writer has additional features beyond what you see in Google Docs. For example, you can make parts of a document available for collaboration and lock down other sections. Then, you can close down a document for any additional team editing.

Zoho Writer also has 350 fonts included. The doc review process is more advanced than Google Docs – you can search through and filter comments, send them via a link, and respond to comments using email instead of visiting the document. "What I like about Zoho is that their content creation tools are part of a larger platform of applications, including things like task management and CRM," says Lepofsky.

4. Quip

This relatively new and powerful team collaboration cloud application works like a mash-up between Slack and Microsoft Office. Instead of relying on email as the primary form of collaboration between team members, Quip uses threaded discussions that take place within the app itself. Inline chats are a major part of what makes this such a useful tool for knowledge workers who need to work as a team. There are also wikis for knowledge sharing and task management tools.

The app further differentiates itself by having a full document versioning history and desktop apps for Mac and Windows. "Quip brings together content creation and communication via chat and they are blurring the boundaries between documents and spreadsheets," says Lepofsky. "Instead, you can simply insert a spreadsheet into a page."

5. Microsoft Office Online

It's strange to think that Microsoft Office might be merely an alternative to Google Docs. This powerhouse has been around for decades, and many Microsoft-centric companies rely on it exclusively. However, it's not as well-regarded as a cloud-enabled suite. Many companies use the desktop versions of Office and not the online versions.

That said, the cloud-based options compete directly with Google Docs in that there are iPad and Android versions available, they show (in real-time) who is editing a document and the changes being made, and yet have all of the power of the desktop apps including a massive template library.

"Microsoft Office is not the 'old office suite' many people think of," says Lepofsky. "They have integrated Office 365, Yammer and Skype, introduced Sway and Planner, and enable people to discover content in Delve."

Round up: The ultimate portable security toolbox

Introduction

Portable apps are incredibly convenient – particularly security tools. They don't have to be installed, and are optimized for use from a USB stick, portable hard drive or cloud storage service. This means you can use your chosen security and privacy programs on any PC, at any time. Portable apps don't leave any files behind after you've closed them down, and won't conflict with software already installed.

Another benefit is that portable apps are usually supplied in a simple ZIP archive, not bundled with any potentially unwanted programs (if such an app has an 'installer', it will only extract the executable file and let you choose where to save it).

Here, we've gathered our favorite portable apps for keeping your data secure and your privacy intact. As with any security software, make sure the programs in your portable toolkit are kept up to date. Most should update themselves automatically when run on an internet-connected PC, but also keep an eye out for the developer's release notes.

KeePass Professional Portable

One of the cornerstones of security is a strong password, but remembering multiple passwords, each one containing letters, numbers and special characters, is a real challenge - especially if you update them as often as you should.

KeePass Professional Portable (also known as KeePass 2) offers an alternative by enabling you to store all of your passwords in one secure, encrypted database - you need only remember one master password.

Once you have the program running in the background, you can use a keyboard shortcut to fill in username and password fields on websites and in programs automatically. There's no need to even open the app to copy the relevant password - KeePass can do it all for you automatically.

Local Area Security Audit Tool

Local Area Security Audit Tool can scan not only single computers for security issues, but multiple networked machines as well. It's designed with advanced security testing in mind, but is also useful for home users who want to identify weaknesses in their setup.

Unlike many of the tools in this kit, which are designed for use in an emergency once a PC is already infected, Local Area Security Audit Tool is a prophylactic measure. It won't fix security issues, but its in-depth scan will reveal what sensitive information on your PC or network could be accessed by malware.

These include stored passwords, address book entries, wrong security configurations, browser history, cookies and much more. The results can be eye-opening; you'll see just how many passwords your browser is storing, and be warned if you're going about your daily business with an Admin account. The issues it finds are almost always easy to solve, and doing so could save you serious hassle further down the road.

We recommend only running Local Area Security Audit Tool on your home LAN; you might attract the ire of your company IT department if you begin scanning their corporate network.

Norton Power Eraser

Norton Power Eraser is a free rescue tool developed to remove malware that your regular antivirus program may miss. It specialises in 'scamware' - fraudulent programs that claim to have discovered a critical problem with your PC that can only be resolved by downloading something nasty, or by paying a fee.

If you're suddenly seeing popups or notifications from a program you don't recognise, open your toolkit and set Power Eraser to work.

Power Eraser can also scan for more benign (but nevertheless irritating) potentially unwanted programs, which are easy to download accidentally alongside legitimate free software.

For a more targeted diagnosis, the advanced options let you perform a Reputation Scan on a file or folder you suspect may be harboring malware. This scan aims to detect new threats as soon as they arise using data from thousands of other Norton users.

If you have more than one bootable operating system on your PC, you can also specify which one to scan (though this only works with multiple instances of Windows).

McAfee Stinger

McAfee Stinger is another excellent portable rescue tool, and is ideal if you think that you might be dealing with a virus or rootkit.

Before performing a scan with Stinger, you'll be prompted to close all other running applications on your system, so make sure you save any work before proceeding.

Stinger now includes a real-time scanner that looks for new infections, but this is still in beta and shouldn't be relied on to keep your system safe. We recommend installing a tool like Avira Free Antivirus or Avast Free Antivirus for real-time protection, and keeping Stinger on a portable device for emergencies.

Comodo Cleaning Essentials

Comodo Cleaning Essentials contains an excellent malware scanner, but its real attraction is Killswitch (which you'll find as a separate application in the same ZIP archive) which can identify and terminate unsafe processes running on an infected PC.

Killswitch scans all the processes currently running on your PC, and flags any that might be malicious. It can also check the programs running and show you their resource usage (ideal if your PC has suddenly slowed to a crawl for no apparent reason), and let you manage the applications that start at the same time as Windows.

If you appreciate its extra functionality, you can set Killswitch to replace the usual Windows Task Manager that appears when you press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete].

Bear in mind that stopping Windows Explorer will leave you without a desktop until it restarts, and terminating drivers will cause the associated hardware to stop working.
